Whom we supported
FairVote is one of the leading organizations in the country focused on the issue of reforms to our election system that can make our elections more representative. For many years the organization has been the leading advocate for ranked choice voting (RCV), and a key provider of practical support to the implementation of RCV systems. In recent years FairVote has been the main driver behind multi-member districts elections for Congress, an innovation that David Brooks of The New York Times calls, “One Reform to Save America.” The idea is to have representatives elected in districts of three to five members, based on ranked choice voting. That approach would mean substantial political minorities such as red state democrats, blue state republicans, and independents would have the chance at representation they don’t have in a single member district system. Multi-member districts would broaden representation, significantly reduce gerrymandering, and lessen polarization. The House bill that would establish this multi-member approach is called the Fair Representation Act
Why we contributed
Election Reformers Network provided a grant to FairVote in order to co-host a conference in Washington in 2019 to promote the Fair Representation Act.
