Innovation in Democracy: Why America’s Future Depends on it

In this article, ERN's Executive Director Kevin Johnson argues innovation is key to strengthening democracy and confronting contemporary political challenges, from hyper-partisanship and polarization to governmental gridlock and dysfunction. To improve our country’s political health and secure democratic governance for future generations, creative and dynamic ideas are needed. At the forefront of ERN’s political innovation agenda are four reforms that promise to restore trust, competitiveness, and legitimacy to our elections: impartial election governance, independent redistricting, nonpartisan primaries, and Electoral College reform.
