Election Reformers Network Statement on the Death of Former IRI President Lorne Craner
Election Reformers Network (ERN) joins with democracy activists and organizations around the world in mourning the death of Lorne Craner. Mr. Craner served as foreign policy advisor to Senator John McCain, longtime president of the International Republican Institute, and Assistant Secretary of State. As a tireless advocate for democracy, Mr. Craner worked to expand programs around the world that empowered citizens and activists to put in place institutional reforms critical for democratic transitions and to sustain hard-won democratic gains.
“Through his distinguished career, Mr. Craner worked to support activists around the world to oversee, conduct, monitor, and improve legitimate elections around the world,” said ERN Executive Director Kevin Johnson. “We will miss his voice in discussions on improving our own elections in the United States.” Added ERN Board Chair Eric Bjornlund, “our thoughts are with his family and the global network of democracy activists empowered by his lifelong commitment to supporting legitimate, credible elections worldwide.”
